In today’s complex and rapidly changing financial landscape, continuous learning and upskilling are crucial for professionals involved in corporate financial decision-making. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) recognizes this need and offers the In-House Corporate Finance Management Certification Programme, a valuable opportunity for professionals to enhance their expertise. I recently had the privilege of attending Day 1 of this intensive programme, held at the Bon Hotel in Ikeja GRA, Lagos, and I’m eager to share the key takeaways and insights gained from this immersive experience.

Working Capital Management: Optimizing Short-Term Financial Health

The first session of the day, led by the knowledgeable Ayomide Olofinmoyo, focused on Working Capital Management. This session emphasized the strategic importance of effectively managing a company’s short-term assets and liabilities. We explored the core components of working capital, including cash, accounts receivable, inventory, and accounts payable, and how their efficient management impacts profitability and liquidity. The discussion delved into the challenges of balancing profitability and liquidity, emphasizing the need for careful planning and control.

Specific techniques for optimizing working capital were also covered, including strategies for accelerating cash collection, managing inventory levels efficiently, and negotiating favorable payment terms with suppliers. The session also highlighted the impact of working capital management on key financial metrics, such as the cash conversion cycle and the current ratio. Real-world case studies were used to illustrate how effective working capital management can give companies a competitive edge.
